2018 FIRST Robotics – FIRST POWER UP – Build Season Week 1
We are now through the first week of the FIRST POWER UP build season. Here at King’s, we have basically done a complete overall to our Robotics program. We, as a team, have decided that instead of taking the whole 6 weeks to just build the robot and then use the competitions to finalize the programming. We are implementing an aggressive schedule that will get the robot built in just a few weeks while allowing the software and drive team a substantial amount of time to perfect the operation of the robot before the very first competition. One of the things I have learned over the years on the Robotics team is that with the lighter schedule many team members find it a little easier to get distracted. By implementing the more ambitious schedule, I am seeing team members putting their best foot forward effectively creating a productive work environment.
With the season underway, here is a quick look and what is happening in both our Engineering and Business Teams.
Within the core of the Engineering team, we have broken into 3 distinct prototyping groups. One focused on the collector, one on the lift and the third on the climber. As the head of the team, I have also incorporated the Scrum project management system that will provide ample opportunity for the software team to work on programming the robot throughout the whole process. Our lead electrical engineer began the process of training the new members of his team and in preparation for wiring the components of the robot, have researched many various wiring methods. Our software team is preparing for the aggressive schedule and has taken this week to train, connect to the controller station and programmed a mock chassis. Our safety lead has stepped up and is working very hard to improve our very solid safety program.
The new ambitious scheduling has carried over to the Business side of our team. They have begun award submissions and are preparing for our unveiling event that we host during the Fifth week of Build Season. This year for Chairman’s, we are moving away from our standard slogan and have implemented a focused group of team members to develop our new messaging. Stay tuned as we will reveal when we get closer to Chairman’s. With the new messaging, comes a new business plan. A select group is updating and preparing the new plan with the most up-to-date program information. On the marketing side, we have new members getting trained on our current internal programs, we are exploring new ways to convey our messaging and the team even completed our t-shirt design.
I have to admit that I am very excited for this year. The team is working hard and I am very proud of how everyone is stepping up to take on the challenge of a new season. I will continue to keep up with the build season updates and how our unveiling event is coming along.
